This year Bodega Garzón has reached a new milestone, obtaining the National Energy Efficiency Award in the Tourism category. This is a new initiative of the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mining, established in 2009 to publicly acknowledge the institutions, entities and companies for their efforts and achievements regarding energy saving and efficient use within different activity sectors.
This award follows the LEED Certification obtained by Bodega Garzón, becoming the first fully sustainable winery.
Designed by acclaimed Argentina-based architecture firm Bórmida & Yanzón, the winery has 205,000-square-foot of sustainable design developed by Bodega Garzon’s director of construction Carlos Hartmann, architect and sustainability expert (LEED AP). Built in harmony with the hills and over natural terraces – a design that enables the process of gravity winemaking – Bodega Garzón optimizes energy efficiency with insulating green roofs which also develop a biodiverse environment, enabling rainwater harvesting and reuse, and also a high-efficiency HVAC with heat recovery. This modern winery produces wines celebrated by preeminent wine critics and establishes itself as a world-renowned destination furthering sustainability, wine culture and tourism in Uruguay.
“As one of the first wine producers in Garzón, Uruguay, we had the responsibility to construct something that will have a long-lasting legacy and that will protect the purity of its land and wildlife”, stated Engineer Alejando Bulgheroni, owner of Bodega Garzón.
