From the Andes to the Atlantic. A journey through South America’s most iconic terroirs

South America is a land of extreme contrasts. Snow-capped mountain ranges, sun-soaked valleys, jungles, pampas and oceanic coasts shape a continent where nature sets the rhythm of wine. In every corner, terroir leaves its mark, and each glass tells a story of climate, soil and human passion.

The Andes: altitude, sunlight and purity

At the heart of the continent, the Andes rise like a backbone that defines much of the pulse of South American wine. At their feet, the vineyards of Argentina and Chile cling to poor, rocky soils, defying altitude to achieve a unique expression.

In Mendoza, cradle of Malbec, the sun shines intensely by day, while cool nights preserve the grapes’ natural acidity. The wines born here are powerful, deep and full of character, with firm tannins and a vibrant fruit core that mirrors the energy of the mountains.

Across the range, Chile’s Casablanca and Maipo Valleys combine the influence of the Pacific with the strength of Andean soils. The result is vibrant Sauvignon Blancs and elegant Cabernet Sauvignons, where the balance between freshness and structure defines an identity marked by precision.

From the high plateau to the Atlantic: new perspectives

As the map moves east, the landscape changes—and so do the wines. In the Calchaquí Valleys and the Uco Valley, altitudes above 2,000 meters challenge traditional winemaking logic. There, intense sunlight, wide temperature swings and sandy soils create extreme conditions that translate into concentrated, aromatic wines—yet increasingly refined and expressive thanks to a new generation of winemakers who understand that power can also be subtlety.

Beyond the mountains, the Atlantic awaits. In the rolling hills of eastern Uruguay, the landscape becomes softer, greener and more undulating. Proximity to the sea changes everything: humidity, breeze, light, and the rhythm of grape ripening.

Garzón: where land and sea meet

It is here, in the hills of Garzón, that the journey finds its most distinctive point. In this corner of Uruguay, just a few kilometers from the ocean, the terroir brings together elements unique in the world: ballast soils—ancient, fractured rock that drains precisely and contributes minerality—and an Atlantic microclimate that moderates temperatures and allows for slow, balanced ripening.

The result is wines with their own identity: fresh, vibrant, elegant, with a purity that reflects the essence of the place. Whites that evoke sea breeze and bright citrus; reds with delicate texture and mineral notes that recall the land where they were born.

At Bodega Garzón, viticulture is an ongoing dialogue between humans and nature. Each plot, each vine, each glass is an interpretation of the environment—an homage to the balance between innovation and respect for the land.

From the Andes to the Atlantic, South America reveals its oenological diversity as a journey of discovery. From the intensity of altitude to the freshness of the sea, the continent’s wines celebrate its geography.

And at Bodega Garzón, that story reaches its purest, most elegant and most profoundly Atlantic expression.
