On Thursday 10th, Friday 11th, and Saturday 12th March, we celebrated the opening of Bodega Garzón with three major events attended by local and international journalists, government authorities, leading regional entrepreneurs, major customers, and the winery team.
This venture, which dates back to 1999, when Engineer Alejandro Bulgheroni and his wife Bettina discovered their “little Tuscany in Uruguay” and began crafting a family dream, is now a reality. In less than a decade, Bodega Garzón has become the most emblematic winery in the country, set in a new and ideal location, 160 metres above the sea, in the hills of Garzón.
Imprinted in this recently opened building is our clear vision to propose a paradigm shift that will set a new standard for the region. In our constant pursuit of the greatest quality, we have embraced this premise, while also being highly respectful of the environment and managing to turn this intervention into a tool for integration
The building was designed by the renowned architecture firm Bórmida & Yanzón from Mendoza, Argentina, and the interior spaces were designed by Backen, Gillam & Kroeger from California, United States. The sustainable design programme was developed by the Director of Construction of Samconsult, and the Green Areas division of Agroland is currently implementing the landscaping project designed in collaboration with Bórmida & Yanzón, Eduardo Vera, Inscape, and Samconsult. The company in charge of building the winery was Kentisur.
It is also worth mentioning that our winery, with an area of 19,050 m2, is on its way to becoming the first sustainable winery built outside North America to receive the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification, meeting the strict requirements of the United States Green Building Council (USGBC), which consist of a set of standards on sustainable building strategies.
On Thursday and Friday, guests enjoyed a master class with our winemaker, Alberto Antonini, who has a proven track record in the wine sector worldwide and has worked for the most prestigious labels in the industry. In this master class, Antonini and Engineer Alejandro Bulgheroni reviewed the history of Bodega Garzón and the journey that has led to the production of several varieties of premium wines. There was also a tasting session of Albariño 2016 and Tannat 2015 varietals, which are still in the ageing process before their market launch.
On Saturday we welcomed the highest country authorities and regional leading entrepreneurs. The event began with speeches by Engineer Alejandro Bulgheroni and the Vice President of Uruguay, Raúl Sendic, who then proceeded jointly to unveil the opening plaque and symbolically cut the ribbon. It is also worth noting that the winery was blessed by Cardinal Daniel Sturla.
And thus Bodega Garzón is now open: a one-of-a-kind place which invites visitors to enjoy an exclusive menu in our restaurant, with a breathtaking view of our vineyards, as well as unforgettable experiences enjoying our landscapes and tasting our products.
